FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Thank you from OSHA InspectorOctober 2008
Hi Didi:
I was in your
Asbestos Refresher Course .... I just wanted to send you a note thanking
you for the course.
I liked your
approach, especially with the those of us with regulatory positions. Your
approach upheld the integrity of individual persons, and the integrity of
the job, and when diminishing anything - you spoke generically to individual
inflexibility and rigidity. These are real problem attributes that all of
us have experienced with those that we work with in the work force in every
type of job, government, academia, consulting, you name it.
You left out
the temptation to put the OSHA person or the "regulator among us" "on the
spot" in class. Your approach was more of a team work orientation. For
example, instead of immediately saying, "What does OSHA say about this?"
when an OSHA question came up, you would answer and ask if I would like to
add something and then gave me the opportunity to do so, and on other
occasions you would ask if I wanted to answer or if I would prefer that you
answer. On other questions, you would give the participants in class to add
their experiences to your answer.
I appreciated
this teamwork approach. This positive approach is very conducive to
everyone being able to learn from each other's experience, it allows others
to feel comfortable about contributing in class, and does not foster poor
attitudes towards persons in regulatory positions. It doesn't cast out the
one working for the regulatory agency as the "bad guy" which has been an
easy route for other instructors and one that very effectively
and inappropriately deflects instructor responsibility in teaching,
particularly in teaching the material that some may not like to hear.
After all,
working for the government is a clear demonstration that we're not in this
job to get rich. For me personally, making a difference, however small or
long it takes is the biggest motivator and reward.
Thanks for
valuing me as a participant in your class.
Sincerely,
Chris
